Inspirational Conference: Terror, Security and Human Rights - The Global Perspective
Mohamed Abbou NOW free to travel
Mohamed Abbou, who we had invited to speak at our conference, was banned from leaving the country and couldn't attend.
Here's and update from Barrie:
I'm certain everyone will be delighted to learn the incredible news that Mohamed Abbou was called on Saturday 28 March by the Tunisian Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.
The Ministry told him he was free to travel abroad.
The Minister of Justice has sent a letter to the Minister of Interior to inform him that no travel restrictions are now imposed on Mohamed Abbou.
This, he believes, it is due to our actions and pressure from EU embassies.
It's just a shame this didn't come in time for our conference.

Just an update on the situation of Mohammed Abbou. He was allowed to travel to France on 8th June. On 9th June he participated in a press conference organised by AI France regarding the launch of the French version of the report Challenging Repression;Human Rights Defenders in the Middle East and North Africa.
Subsequently he travelled to Brussels where he met with the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of the European Parliament and the European Commision on Human Rights.
Regrettably since his return to Tunisia he has been subjected to a smear campaign in the Tunisian press ( a tactic used by the government against other human rights defenders).
I am the Tunisa Country Coordinator and also the North Africa Regional Coordinator at AI(UK) which are both voluntary roles. I am also a member of the Croydon group.
Hi Laura,
I have just seen your comment so sorry for the delay in replying. If you would like to do work on Tunisia please contact me on beverley.foulkes-jones@amnesty.org.uk and i will put you on the North Africa Region's mailing list. We produce an ezine every 4 months with lots of information about human rights in Tunisia and North Africa and with actions you can take.
I look forward to hearing from you and anyone else who is interested in working on North Africa.
Tunisia Country Coordinator
This is a great achievement, but like in Abbou's case, I believe there are hundreds of similar cases in Tunisia. How can we help people in similar situations? Does Amnesty have actions that I can take and I should be aware of? Thx, L.
