We, the undersigned, representing international human rights groups and activists, university and academic centres, social justice initiatives and people who are concerned about human rights urge the National Peoples Congress to initiate an open and independent public inquiry into the events of June 1989 and for the Chinese authorities to stop the ongoing persecution of human rights defenders and activists who seek justice for the victims of the military crackdown.

The scenes of military personnel opening fire on fleeing and unarmed civilians shock us to this day. The wounds are still open so we urge you to take the 20th anniversary of the crackdown on the pro-democracy movement as a golden opportunity to embrace our call for truth, justice, and accountability. We believe protecting human rights is the responsibility of everyone. This is not interference in the internal affairs of China; this is a reflection of our common humanity and international solidarity with the people of China.
