Beijing is two cities. One is of power and of money. People don’t care who their neighbors are; they don’t trust you. The other city is one of desperation. I see people on public buses, and I see their eyes, and I see they hold no hope. They can’t even imagine that they’ll be able to buy a house. They come from very poor villages where they’ve never seen electricity or toilet paper.

In so many ways Glasgow is like a bigger version of Belfast. Victorian-era architecture. Heavy industrial heritage. Revamped waterfront. A drinking culture that loves its hops, but has learned to embrace the coffee bean. And, of course, an unhealthy dose of sectarianism beneath – or not as the case may be – the surface.

But I fear Scotland's biggest city is still about ten years ahead of Belfast when it comes to the public promotion of gay rights through such an edgy contemporary art exhibition.

A military junta, partly backed by the United States, had been in power in Brazil since 1964, and would continue to rule until 1984. After student protests in 1968, habeas corpus was suspended and a nationwide state of siege declared. In 1969, rebels kidnapped the US ambassador, but the rebel leader was assassinated soon after. Judicial torture and murder of political opponents, as well as "disappearances", were regular occurrences.

The Death Penalty Photography Documentary Project is an eight-year product of exploring capital punishment through the photographer's lens. It was birthed from a college art project to creatively address a human rights issue, and started with a few photos from an execution vigil in Huntsville, Texas. The original project has since grown into an internationally shown exhibit consisting of over 800 images - making it the largest, most varied known collection of photos about the death penalty in the United States' modern era.

Dead Wrong: International Posters Against the Death Penalty

The posters in Dead Wrong illustrate numerous death-penalty related issues, including the impact of racism, poverty, and political beliefs on sentencing. Many of these posters were produced while the prisoners were on trial or in jail, and thus convey the urgency of the issue. Some are commemoratives, marking the deaths of prisoners later deemed innocent or those whose guilt is still debated, including the Haymarket Martyrs, Sacco and Vanzetti, and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Some are the focus of international campaigns, such as Mumia Abu Jamal, while others are unknown to most.
