Stand Up For Justice: Comedy at Belfast Festival

Saturday 25 October saw the 6th year of Amnesty’s legendary comedy event Stand Up For Justice, as part of Belfast Festival at Queen’s.

Despite the wind and rain, it went down a storm (!) as a 600 strong audience packed into the Whitla Hall for a great night of international stand-up comedy.

MC for the night was Scouse comic John Bishop, who worked the crowd brilliantly and kindly plugged Amnesty throughout the show. Comedy-wise, the audience was treated to performances from included Daniel Rigby, Katherine Ryan, Mike Wozniak, Andi Osho and Damian Clark.

Punters and the media reacted with delight as the event gained some great coverage in The Irish News, Belfast Telegraph preview, Belfast Telegraph review, and the Newsletter: "If you do one thing this weekend" and a very encouraging comment on our Flickr stream: “I was at last night's 'Stand Up', as I have been for last number of years - last night was best show yet, all acts were 'first class' - John Bishop was a great compere.”

9:37 Andi Osho takes the stage. She’s from Newham – a dangerous place to have the Olympics. She tells us about living there. The word ‘chav’ features heavily in her comedic discourse as does a bit of MCing. Not the John Bishop sort of MCing, the rapping sort. She's good.

She used to volunteer on the Samaritans phoneline and also did a bit of stewarding for Arsenal. Sometimes she got her roles mixed up … with inevitably hilarious results.

8:48 Mike Wozniak takes the stage. He’s from Portsmouth, a town full of sailors. He has floppy hair and a moustache. He’s very popular in Portsmouth apparently. He tell us he’s never been to Ireland before, but his surreal, slightly sick take on life soon means that the Belfast audience has grasped him to their hearts.

He’s just told a joke about a pet rabbit being ‘bummed to death’. It was his pet. He was seven at the time. It obviously made an impression.

Stand Up For Justice returns to the Belfast Festival at Queen's for the sixth year running. Our regular Festival blogger, Mairead, has cried off, so I'm filling in for one night only. This should be live blogging but the Whitla Hall doesn't have wifi or, rather it does, I just don't have the password. Anyway, will post this later. Here goes…

Human rights can be a serious business. Dealing with torture, wrongful imprisonment, war, extreme poverty and the rest mean that we at Amnesty are pretty serious people much of the time. That's as it should be.

But we also love nothing more than to kick back and have a right old laugh. A giggle. A bit of a titter. Some deep-throated guffawing. Uproarious, thigh slapping cackling. Upper-body trembling and quiet chortling. We love it all. As I say, we like a laugh. Maybe it's cathartic.

AIUK : Human Rights: Poetic Redress

Readings and debate on the role of the writer in explaining, examining and ultimately protecting human rights.

This Amnesty International event will feature writers Carlo Gébler, Glenn Patterson, Éilis Ní Dhuibhne and Kevin Barry, some of the writers who devoted their time and imagination to creating a series of original pieces interpreting the 30 articles of the universal declaration of human rights. The event will be chaired by writer and broadcaster Finola Meredith.

Amnesty International has brought together some of the world’s foremost children’s illustrators to interpret the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The results will be published as a stunningly beautiful book We Are All Born Free featuring the work of Axel Scheffler of gruffalo fame, among others.

Mary Robinson, the first woman President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, continues to be a tireless advocate for securing human rights for all.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights offered a vision of a shared humanity and of shared responsibilities to each other. Sixty years on, in this tenth Amnesty International Annual Lecture, Mary Robinson attempts to answer the question: how universal are human rights?
