DR Congo warning on Rwanda troops

Inviting Rwandan soldiers into eastern Democratic Republic of Congo carries a "high risk of collateral damage", the parliamentary speaker has told the BBC.

Up to 4,000 Rwandan troops have poured over the border since Tuesday for a joint operation with the Congolese army against the Rwandan Hutu FDLR militia.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is struggling to recover from a lengthy civil war in which an estimated three million people have died, mostly through starvation and disease.

Since the country gained independence in 1960, its vast mineral wealth has been a key factor in the country's civil wars and instability.

It has huge reserves of gold, cobalt, tantalite and cassiterite all used in the manufacture of consumer electronics.

Congo army and rebels both guilty of human rights abuses, UN chief says - Telegraph

Both sides in the Democratic Republic of Congo's conflict have carried out gross human rights abuses during five months of fighting, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said. The country's police force, its army and rebel forces ranged against them had committed of rape, torture and summary executions, Mr Ban said in a strongly-worded report prepared for the UN Security Council.
Elements in the army had arbitrarily killed people, raped women and tortured detainees captured during operations .....Rebels, including those of Tutsi commander Laurent Nkunda, were accused of similar abuses............

Fierce fighting between government and rebel forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo is causing a humanitarian catastrophe, the Red Cross has said.

It said the number of displaced people was growing by the hour and that the precarious security situation was making it difficult to deliver aid.

It was the small hours of yesterday morning when they swept through Goma's neighbourhoods: Congolese government soldiers meant to protect the city's population, but who came instead as looters and killers.

Bright red lines of tracer fire criss-crossing the night sky brought the first signs of a bloody night. Then, from around some of the city's neighbourhoods, the flat pop-pop sound of Kalashnikov fire and occasional thud of heavier weapons quickly followed.

Suffering without end in the Congo

If the words humanitarian catastrophe and eastern Congo have a familiar ring to them, it is because the fundamental causes of a conflict that has claimed five million lives and continues to kill 45,000 a month through starvation and disease remain unaddressed. And this despite the world's largest peacekeeping force, with the strongest mandate - to use lethal force if necessary to protect civilian lives. The 17,000-strong UN force, known as Monuc, has patently failed to do this. In most villages the militias represent the only law, the only protection from rape, crop-raiding and kidnap. The international community's attempts to restore order have lost all credibility.
