TPIMs, “Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures”, are the Home Office’s latest way of dealing with people it deems suspected terrorists in Britain. It’s the third supposed “solution” to the “problem” of what to do with people it believes are a threat but says it can’t deport or put on trial.

One of the important elements of the government's desecration of liberty and rights – the use of "secret" evidence to impose control orders, or house arrest, on terror suspects – now looks to be in the advanced stages of decay.

The conviction of three men for conspiring to murder using explosives on aircraft brings a set of competing nightmares into the debate about terrorism. The images of the death and destruction apparently planned by Abdulla Ali, Assad Sarwar and Tanvir Hussain on transatlantic airliners are terrifying to watch and rewarding for the intelligence services, who describe their operation disrupting the plot as "their most significant investigation ever undertaken".

Terror suspect wins battle to leave Britain
