The first details of Burma's newly enacted election laws have been published in state-controlled media.
Burma's military government announced on Monday that the long awaited laws had been passed - a crucial step.
No date for the poll has been set, but the ruling generals have promised that it will be sometime this year.

New evidence of violence against Afghan voters have emerged as election observers confirmed that Taliban fanatics in the south of Afghanistan hacked off the fingers of at least two people who dared to vote in last week's elections.
The country's biggest election monitoring organisation said the Taliban carried out the long-threatened punishment in Kandahar province soon after the voters cast their ballots on Thursday, after which right index fingers were inked to prevent anybody voting again.

Israeli rivals claim election win

The leaders of Israel's two main parties have claimed victory in an early general election.

With almost all the votes counted, the governing centrist Kadima has 28 seats and the right-wing Likud opposition 27, election officials said.

A human rights activist swept to power today in the first democratic presidential polls in the Maldives, ousting from office the man who once imprisoned him and prompting jubilant scenes on the streets of the Indian Ocean island's capital Male.

Mohamed 'Anni' Nasheed, a former Amnesty International prisoner of conscience who founded the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in 2003, secured 54 per cent of the vote – beating Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Asia's longest serving leader, in the run-off election.
