Amnesty accuses Israeli forces of war crimes

"Much of the destruction was wanton and resulted from direct attacks on civilian objects," Amnesty said in a report on the December-January war on the Gaza Strip.

In numerous cases, Israeli troops forced Palestinians to stay in one room of their home while turning the rest of the house into a base and sniper position, "effectively using the families, both adults and children, as human shields and putting them at risk," the group said.

"Intentionally using civilians to shield a military objective, often referred to as using 'human shields' is a war crime," Amnesty said.

When I recommended to him a long article on American torture, he read it right through to the end and then put the paper down with a slap on his knee. "Terrible, terrible," he muttered.

Raed al-Atamna's family's six houses were destroyed in the recent Gaza conflict, as well as the cars he uses to earn his living as a taxi driver.

With nearly 3,000 families homeless, rented accommodation is scarce in Gaza - Mr Atamna's pregnant wife and seven children are now staying with relatives, while he sleeps in a corrugated metal shack next to his ruined house.

Gaza homes destruction 'wanton'

Human rights investigators say Israeli forces engaged in "wanton destruction" of Palestinian homes during the recent conflict in Gaza.

Amnesty International has told the BBC News website the methods used raised concerns about war crimes.

Israel's military said buildings were destroyed because of military "operational needs".

Explosives haul missing in Gaza

A large stockpile of unexploded weapons has disappeared in Gaza, before United Nations experts were able to dispose of it safely, the BBC has learned.

The explosives, including aircraft bombs and white phosphorus shells, were fired by the Israeli military during its recent offensive in the Gaza Strip.

UN officials said they were urgently trying to establish where the arms had gone and have called for their return.

On top of the dreadful casualties from Israel's 22-day war in Gaza, we should add a further serious injury. It is longer-lasting and threatens the lives and wellbeing of very many people in the future. In the Israel/Palestine conflict, we are seeing a terrible undermining of international law and the principle that armies should adhere to minimum standards of humane behaviour, even during the heat of battle.

Israeli drones in Gaza may have had British engines, ministers admit

MPs are calling for a full account of arms exports to Israel amid growing concerns that British military equipment was used during the bombardment of Gaza – contrary to Israeli assurances and UK export guidelines.

British arms control officials have admitted they are unable to say whether UK-made aircraft engines were fitted to drones.

The foreign secretary, David Miliband, has twice been challenged on the issue of the engine drones in the Commons since Amnesty International and the Guardian three weeks ago pointed to evidence suggesting engines made by an Israeli-owned factory in Staffordshire had been fitted to the Hermes 450 unmanned aerial vehicle.

Gaza protesters raid arms factory

Seven men and two women have been arrested after a group of protesters attacked an arms factory in Sussex.

EDO MBM Technology in Moulsecombe was broken into overnight by the Smash EDO group in response to the action by the Israeli military in Gaza.

Protesters say weapons components made at the site are used by Israeli aircraft on bombing missions.

U.N. agency says Gaza food aid running out

U.N. agency in Gaza will stop distributing aid to more than 750,000 Palestinians because Israel has halted border crossings into the Palestinian territory, the agency's director said Friday.

"We have run out of food. Our warehouses are empty," U.N. Relief and Works Agency Director John Ging said.

"These interruptions on the crossing points affect us immediately," Ging said earlier. "So the immediate impact is that on Saturday morning, we won't have any food to distribute."

Second Gaza activist voyage docks

A boat carrying 27 pro-Palestinian activists has arrived in Gaza despite an Israeli blockade of the territory - the second such voyage in three months.

The ship, named Dignity, arrived at 0800 (0600 GMT) on Wednesday, after sailing from Cyprus overnight.

No attempt was made to stop the boat, despite initial Israeli warnings.

Israel has greatly restricted the movement of people and goods to and from Gaza since Hamas militants seized control of the Strip last year.
