As the Irish Times reports, a new opinion poll out today shows that some 70% of people in Northern Ireland back a Bill of Rights and think it very or quite important for their future. Over 90% want to see a Bill contain social and economic rights offering basic standard protections for healthcare, housing and education.

A 'no brainer', one would think, especially in these times of economic stress. Yet, not all politicians agree.

Take Northern Ireland Secretary of State, Shaun 'seven houses' Woodward, for instance.

Brown meets terror suspects in Saudi jail - Middle East, World - The Independent

Gordon Brown shook hands yesterday with terror suspects who had been locked up in Guantanamo Bay because of their alleged links to al-Qa'ida. The surprise encounter came when the Prime Minister, who is on a four day tour of Gulf states, visited a "correctional centre" in Saudi Arabia for Islamist extremists who are being "deradicalised".

"I am very angry at the House of Lords," the prime minister said at the EU summit in Brussels. "They should not have rejected the proposals we had for pre-charge detention, which in very special circumstances would go up to 42 days. They defied the will of the House of Commons which was expressed in favour of those."
