In a devastating report, a committee set up by India’s Environment Minister has ruled that Vedanta has acted illegally and with ‘total contempt for the law’; that local officials have ‘colluded’ in the company’s illegal activity and falsified documents; that ‘it is established beyond any doubt that the [mining] area is the cultural, religious and economic habitat of the Dongria Kondh ’; and that to allow Vedanta’s mine would be ‘illegal’.

Mining giant Vedanta’s proposed bauxite mine in Orissa's Niyamgiri Hills has sparked protests in India and abroad. The environmental ministry, reacting to reports that the mining will impact the livelihood and traditions of the tribals who live in the vicinity of the mine has withheld a final clearance to the mine.

In February this year, The Church of England decided to sell its entire stake in Vedanta, a FTSE listed company. But in an exclusive interview with NDTV’s Srinivasan Jain, the CEO of Vedanta Resources, Anil Agarwal, says he is going ahead with the project despite mounting unrest.

Cradling her baby, Oliver, Alison, 31, happily strokes his head, holds his hands and feeds him from a bottle, like any proud new mother. But for the Australian primary-school teacher and her 35-year-old British husband, William, the birth of their son has followed a long and desperate medical struggle in which both had almost given up hope of having a child.

Many raise the slogan ‘never forget’, others less comfortable with the memories say ‘move on’. But I would say that there is a third way here. It is one which says ‘never again’, and calls for India to clean up its human rights record and become a proper functioning democracy. That is something that can only be done once justice is served on the accused in the 1984 genocide in Delhi. Then the claim by some that Sikhs cannot ever be safe or receive justice within India has less basis and the potential for further conflict dissipates. We can only hope that closure and justice for the survivors and the community as a whole is at long, long last, not far away.

Of all the examples of human misery on such open display in this remarkable, terrifying, contradictory city, few are more moving than the hand-pulled rickshaws. For a handful of coins, an often-barefooted man dressed in little more than a dhoti tied around his waist will pull his passengers through the noisy, cluttered streets.

If Vendata’s behaviour hasn’t infuriated enough, we now learn the bauxite they plan to take from the Niyamgiri hills may be used to produce nuclear weapons for the Indian government.

The Guardian revealed in 2009 that Vedanta plans on sending the ore to Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd. (BALCO). A Vedanta subsidiary, BALCO supplies 90% of the aluminium used in India’s nuclear-capable Agni, Prithvi and Akaash missiles.
