According to Xinhua latest report (July 6), the violence in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has led to at least 140 people dead and 828 injured.

China protest forces factory move

Ordinary Chinese people appear to have won a victory by forcing the government to move a planned chemical factory.

The plant was supposed to be built in the picturesque coastal city of Xiamen, but will now be moved inland.

Government officials seem to have changed their minds after thousands of Xiamen residents staged protests against the factory.

The case shows how people are becoming increasingly aware of their rights - and can force a government rethink.

Second Gaza activist voyage docks

A boat carrying 27 pro-Palestinian activists has arrived in Gaza despite an Israeli blockade of the territory - the second such voyage in three months.

The ship, named Dignity, arrived at 0800 (0600 GMT) on Wednesday, after sailing from Cyprus overnight.

No attempt was made to stop the boat, despite initial Israeli warnings.

Israel has greatly restricted the movement of people and goods to and from Gaza since Hamas militants seized control of the Strip last year.

Mexico: Violence against women and justice denied in Mexico State

At least 211 people were arrested on 3 and 4 May 2006 in the towns of Texcoco and San Salvador Atenco, Mexico State, following a police operation carried out in response to protests by activists from a local peasant organization. Among those arrested were 47 women. This report describes what happened to the women, with particular emphasis on the reports of sexual abuse as well as the lack of effective and impartial investigations to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
