Lying off the southern tip of India, the tropical island of Sri Lanka has beguiled travellers for centuries with its palm-fringed beaches, diverse landscapes and historical monuments.

But the island has been scarred by a long and bitter civil war arising out of ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese and the Tamil minority in the northeast.

After more than 25 years of violence, the conflict appeared to be at an end - at least militarily - in May 2009, when government forces eliminated the last area controlled by Tamil Tiger rebels.

Sri Lanka's military has announced the death of feared Tamil Tiger rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

He and two of his commanders reportedly died trying to flee the last rebel-held patch of jungle in the north-east.

An army spokesman told the BBC it had yet to identify Prabhakaran's body and Tamil media outside Sri Lanka have denied his death.

Sri Lanka's president is to formally declare the insurgency over shortly, but the country is already celebrating.

Reports of Prabhakaran's fate cannot be verified as reporters are barred from the war zone.

Pictures of the beach near Mullaitivu, the last outpost of Tamil Tiger resistance in Sri Lanka, would have been among the greatest visual images of what war does to people. They would have been, if anybody had been there to take them.

The United Nations says it has received reports that Tamil Tiger rebels are actively preventing civilians from leaving Sri Lanka's war zone.

The Sri Lankan government's refusal of unfettered media access to the country's northeastern war zone, and its attempt to control publicly available information about its conflict with the Tamil Tigers, should come as no surprise. It is in line with a growing trend readily observable across large swaths of the developing world. From Zimbabwe to Burma to North Korea, "they" don't want "you" to know what is really going on.

Amnesty International has appealed to Sri Lanka's government to allow aid to reach more than 300,000 people displaced by fighting in the north.

The human rights group urged both the government and Tamil Tiger rebels to allow international monitors into the northern Wanni region.
