Thousands of you stood up against the practice of waterboarding and called for an end to this illegal and barbaric practice. President Obama has now outlawed waterboarding and other torture techniques used by the CIA . This is a hugely important step in ensuring such abuses do not continue.

You worked with us to help individual detainees such as Binyam Mohammed, Jamil El Banna and Bisher Al Rawi. You sent cards of solidarity and campaigned tirelessly to ensure their release. Now, finally, all three are back in the UK and can begin rebuilding their lives.

You called over and over and over again for the closure of Guantanamo Bay. Some of you demonstrated with us and even more of you sent letter upon letter. You won. President Obama has signed the order for its closure and transfer of prisoners has already begun.

Closer to home you opposed the introduction of a 42 days detention period without charge. You spread the word and nearly 10,000 people signed our petition. On the night we marched in Leeds, the UK government issued a statement that the proposal to extend pre-charge detention was to be dropped .

We could not have achieved any of this without your support. There are however still victories to be claimed and now, more than ever, we need your help to ensure these abuses are not allowed to continue. We can not stand by and watch whilst Governments torture and restrict freedom in the name of security; now is the time to join ProtectTheHuman.com and continue fighting for what you believe in.

Barack Obama has requested the suspension of all military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay, in his first major act as the new US president.

The request would halt proceedings in 21 pending cases, including one against five men accused of plotting the 11 September 2001 attacks.

The grey tomb slab on the Dornhaldenfriedhof in Stuttgart says, in purple letters: “Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, Jan-Carl Raspe”.

This is the last resting place of the terrorists of the Red Army Faction (RAF), who committed suicide on October 18, 1977, in Stammheim prison. An old lady walks past, carrying a watering can. She looks at the flowers, shakes her head disapprovingly, and moves on.

MPS seek to censor the media

Britain's security agencies and police would be given unprecedented and legally binding powers to ban the media from reporting matters of national security, under proposals being discussed in Whitehall.

The Intelligence and Security Committee... wants to press ministers to introduce legislation that would prevent news outlets from reporting stories deemed by the Government to be against the interests of national security.

Saudis indict 991 terrorism suspects

Saudi authorities have indicted 991 suspected militants for participating in terrorist attacks carried out over the past five years, the interior minister said yesterday.

The legal proceedings mark a big step in the country's fight against terrorism. Saudi Arabia has so far been reluctant to resort to trying suspects on terrorism charges that could result in death sentences until it can show the public that every effort has been made to give the defendants a chance to repent.

A new report by MI5, the British domestic security service, challenges existing stereotypes about those involved in terrorism in the UK. The main findings of the classified "operational briefing note" have already been disclosed in the press.

The report, which apparently is based on several hundred case studies, reveals that British-based terrorists fit "no single demographic profile". Most of them are male, but women also play an important role. The majority are British nationals, not illegal immigrants. There is a high proportion of converts. Importantly, MI5 concludes that "assumptions cannot be made about suspects based on skin colour, ethnic heritage or nationality."

A course about al-Qaida and the rise of international terrorism was one of the most popular last term at Harvard's elite Kennedy School of Government. The international students crowding into the school's largest auditorium for the twice-weekly classes were a cross-section of Americans, Europeans and Middle Easterners, including current members of the US army and intelligence community on sabbatical leave. Simply attending it gave me a sense of where tomorrow's western and westernised elites stand vis-a-vis "the long war".

The Pakistan government must be fully transparent and make public any information it has on the whereabouts of individuals of enforced disappearance and rendition (whether within Pakistani detention or following transfer to another state) and ensure that their families are kept regularly updated as to their fate.
