Umida Akhmedova, one of the country's best-known photographers, is due to stand trial on charges of "defamation of the Uzbekistani people" in relation to her photographs of Uzbek men, women and children carrying out everyday activities - images published in a 2007 book called Men and Women - From Dawn to Dusk.

"It has to be the largest regular state-driven act of child exploitation anywhere in the world. The annual cotton harvest in Uzbekistan depends on the forced labour of some 2.7 million children, who are all removed from school for six to eight weeks to work in the fields and enrich the elites of the country's authoritarian regime."

German documentary on intimidation of independent journalists from Uzbekistan

This documentary features Khurmat Babadjanov, who came to speak at the "Terror, Security and Human Rights – The Global Perspective"conference. It highlights the threats independent journalist from Uzbekistan face in and outside their country.

Journalisten werden bespitzelt, ausgewiesen, weggesperrt, gefoltert. Die Menschenrechtssituation im zentralasiatischen Land Usbekistan ist dramatisch. Das Regime versucht zu verhindern, dass Menschen im In- und Ausland an unabhängige Informationen gelangen. Wer kritisch berichtet, muss mit Verfolgung rechnen, auch medial. Nach einem Hassfilm gegen kritische Journalisten wurde vor einem Jahr der Journalist Alischer Saipow ermordet.

European Union must not abandon press freedom defenders

On the eve of the European Union-Central Asia security summit which the French government, the current holder of the EU rotating presidency, is hosting tomorrow in Paris, Reporters Without Borders draws attention to the lack of press freedom in Central Asia, especially Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

...every autumn when the crop is ready, the government shuts down schools and forces children as young as seven into the fields, with strict quotas to meet and expulsion threatening them if they don't make the grade. Social Investors and Human Rights Activists Pressure Government of Uzbekistan

Socially conscious shareholders, pension funds and human rights advocates have joined together to demand that the government of Uzbekistan stop using forced child labour in its cotton harvest. Every year, the government of Uzbekistan reportedly mobilizes hundreds of thousands of children - many from ten to fifteen years old - for the manual harvesting of cotton.
