"It has to be the largest regular state-driven act of child exploitation anywhere in the world. The annual cotton harvest in Uzbekistan depends on the forced labour of some 2.7 million children, who are all removed from school for six to eight weeks to work in the fields and enrich the elites of the country's authoritarian regime."

This documentary features Khurmat Babadjanov, who came to speak at the "Terror, Security and Human Rights – The Global Perspective"conference. It highlights the threats independent journalist from Uzbekistan face in and outside their country.

...every autumn when the crop is ready, the government shuts down schools and forces children as young as seven into the fields, with strict quotas to meet and expulsion threatening them if they don't make the grade. You can download the Environmental Justice Foundation's excellent report on cotton in Uzbekistan

Socially conscious shareholders, pension funds and human rights advocates have joined together to demand that the government of Uzbekistan stop using forced child labour in its cotton harvest. Every year, the government of Uzbekistan reportedly mobilizes hundreds of thousands of children - many from ten to fifteen years old - for the manual harvesting of cotton.
