The Iranian authorities are continuing to harass activists working to defend women’s rights. Ronak Safarzadeh and Hana Abdi – two Kurdish Iranian activists – currently remain detained without charge or trial. They were arrested in October and November 2007 for peacefully exercising their rights.

Mexico: Violence against women and justice denied in Mexico State

At least 211 people were arrested on 3 and 4 May 2006 in the towns of Texcoco and San Salvador Atenco, Mexico State, following a police operation carried out in response to protests by activists from a local peasant organization. Among those arrested were 47 women. This report describes what happened to the women, with particular emphasis on the reports of sexual abuse as well as the lack of effective and impartial investigations to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Petition for safe schools for girls

Schools are places for children to learn and grow. But many girls all over the world go to school fearing for their safety. Though both girls and boys of school age can be the victims of violence, girls are more likely to be the victims of gender-based violence, particularly sexual abuse and violence.

Breakthrough in battle for justice for ‘comfort women’

The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on survivors of Japan’s military sexual slavery system (the so-called ‘comfort women’ system), which urges the Government of Japan to acknowledge, apologize and compensate the victims.
