Bigotry stems from extremism and the overvaluation of one's self, and these are not things that are taught by Christianity or Islam. I am gay, and a Christian, and I see what you mean, but it is not a faith in itself that is harmful; it is an inveterately blind and fundamentalist approach that causes problems. "Religiosity", hipocrisy and piousness are mainifestations of a feigned relationship with God. Religion is used as an excuse for bigotry and selfishness, and in that sence it is indeed dangerous. :)
